A month or two this pin was showing up quite frequently in my feed: Spicy Dr. Pepper Pulled Pork. Intriguing. So I pinned it… and forgot about it.
Then Sarae Hope raved about her success with it, so when we found some leftover sealed soda from our wedding, I knew what to do with it.
As I’m prone to do with recipes, I made some substitutions… namely I used Coca-Cola instead of Dr. Pepper. This may be sacrilege for some (Karie), but it’s what we had on hand, so I went with it. One thing I can say for sure… Chipotle Peppers in Adobo Sauce are a game changer for this recipe and maybe become my go-to secret ingredient.
Second major change I made to the Pioneer Woman’s Dr. Pepper Pork recipe was to throw all the ingredients into the crock pot on low for about 7 – 8 hours. The house smelled amazing as the pork simmered in the chilies.
While that was happening, I took the liberty of trying out a second Pinterest recipe with the leftover soda: Coca-Cola BBQ Sauce. It’s full of onions, but turned out to be very tasty — especially on the second day when the flavors had a chance to meld better. And since I’m edging up to nearly a decade of living in the South, I have come appreciate a good cole slaw & some Hawaiian slider buns with any BBQ dish.
